The purpose of this report is to review all the initiatives proposed by all Spanish port authorities for the decarbonization of port activities.

is a Spanish public body, under the Ministry responsible for the matter (currently the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility), with overall responsibility for the entire state-owned port system. It promotes, supports, represents and unites state-owned ports to create a more competitive, safe, interconnected and sustainable system.

The Spanish Port System is made up of 46 ports, managed by 28 Port Authorities, whose coordination and efficiency control corresponds to the Public Body Puertos del Estado.

Ports are important links in the logistics and transport chains, through which around 60% of exports and 85% of imports pass, representing 53% of Spanish foreign trade with the European Union and 96% with third countries.

Ports of the State, in collaboration with the Port Authorities, has drawn up a Strategic Framework for the Port System, the first to be carried out with the participation of all the agents in the maritime-port sector. This document is a strategic plan that describes the current state and desired future of the Spanish port system until 2030. Its objective is to achieve a transformation in port activities, driving towards digitalization, efficiency, sustainability and safety.

Ports of the State Innovation Model

The Ports 4.0 capital fund is the corporate open innovation model Ports of the State and the Spanish Port Authorities to attract, support and facilitate the application of talent and entrepreneurship to the public and private logistics-port sector. The main objective is to promote and incorporate innovation as an element of competitiveness, efficiency, sustainability, safety and security. It is associated with new technologies, the development of new, more efficient processes and business models based on the 4.0 economy (Big Data, IoT, Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Machine Learning, Additive Printing, Robotics, Automation, Analytics, etc.).

The report lists the actions of each of the Spanish port authorities, including both planning instruments and recent projects and other innovation actions.
