TCED – Quantum Data Encryption Technology

Project in development since 01/03/2023
POC: innovación@isdefe.es

Description

Winner of the 8th Call of the Isdefe RD Idea Capture and Management Programme 2022

Internal R+D project

Isdefe’s internal RD project Quantum Technology for Data Encryption (TCED) aims to implement a system for transmitting data between two conventional devices with quantum encryption through channels considered insecure. This transmission is carried out over the air, which allows the physical location of the users to be changed.

The project aims to incorporate Isdefe’s know-how in QKD project management, in addition to developing and acquiring the necessary skills to lead and manage quantum projects, and to provide support to the National Government and the Armed Forces.

In order to carry out this proposal, implementation will be carried out in three main blocks:

  • Data transmission between two nodes (via radio): first with a simple transmission (low bit volume) and then with a high transmission (video transmission).
  • Security layer: security is intended to be implemented in three phases. Given the sensitivity of a quantum optical signal, this would first be done in close and controlled environments, secondly, at intermediate distances with possible refractions, and finally, with high distances between terraces of two buildings.
  • To test the effectiveness of the proposed development, a communication attack would finally be developed to demonstrate the security of the system.

The project would conclude with a two-point communication with quantum (optical) encryption that can be displayed at the DGAM and any other public body that requires research in secure communications.

This project will be developed between three public entities: Isdefe, the State Agency of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M).

Isdefe’s main interest is to develop a test model that will allow the AGE and the DGAM to experiment in order to make decisions on more advanced developments, in addition to researching its own capabilities to improve satellite applications with this type of technology.

The project is being developed by a team coordinated by Francisco Javier Morales Comalat and Rosa María Pulido Puerto of Isdefe’s Space and Technology Centres Department.
