The European R&D project aN Enhanced pre-frontier intelligence picture to Safeguard The eurOpean boRders (NESTOR) is co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, under grant agreement number 101021851.
The European Union concentrated a large part of its research and innovation activities in the previous Framework Program called Horizon 2020 (H2020). In the 2014-2020 period and through the implementation of three pillars, it has contributed to address major societal challenges, promote industrial leadership in Europe and strengthen the excellence of its science base.
The Horizon 2020 Program has integrated for the first time all phases from knowledge generation to activities closer to the market: basic research, technology development, demonstration projects, pilot manufacturing lines, social innovation, technology transfer, proof of concept, standardization, support for pre-commercial public procurement, venture capital and guarantee system.
The NESTOR R&D project aims to develop and demonstrate a fully functional next-generation integrated border surveillance system that provides situational awareness of the pre-frontier space beyond the maritime and land border areas following the concept of European Integrated Border Management. NESTOR’s wide-area and long-range surveillance capabilities for detection, reconnaissance, classification and tracking of moving targets are based on optical, thermal imaging and radio frequency (RF) spectrum analysis technologies powered by a network of interoperable sensors including stationary installations and manned or unmanned mobile vehicles (air, land, water, underwater) capable of operating both independently and in swarms. The NESTOR BC3i (Border Command Control and Coordination intelligence) system fuses real-time border surveillance data combined with web and social media information, creating and sharing an intelligent pre-border picture with local, regional and national command centers in an augmented reality environment that is interoperable with CISE and EUROSUR.
The Isdefe team participating in the project as a member of the consortium is coordinated by Raquel Pastor Pastor from Isdefe’s Defense and Security Technologies Department.
