The European R&D project AI technologies for enhancing capabilities, greater efficiency and effectiveness for customs (CustomAI) is co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of the HORIZONTE EUROPE Program, under grant agreement number 101226029.
EU customs authorities are a cornerstone of international trade: they play a vital role in preventing the entry of illegal goods, protecting revenue, and ensuring the smooth flow of trade. Balancing these responsibilities is especially complex in today’s context, with a rapidly growing volume of global commerce and limited human resources.
To address these challenges, the CustomAI consortium has pooled its experience and expertise to develop an AItoolkit to reduce the number of false positives (situations where containers or packages that do not contain contraband are selected for inspection). The proposed toolkit will enhance customs operations by incorporating non-intrusive and robust AI-enhanced technologies to predict, detect and select high-risk cargo for inspection. The VCCO (Virtual Customs Control Office) concept is adopted to manage customs control processes on control units (e.g., containers or parcels) in an integrated manner.
