5G technologies and their application in civilian and military environments.

5G Technology FEMBMS Status Report

The new 5G digital mobile communication standard offers very significant improvements focused on three potential aspects: a significant increase in the data transfer rate (eMMB), a significant reduction in the latency of transmissions (URLLC) and a considerable increase in the number of devices it can serve (mMTC). On the other hand, it is also capable of showing promising results in the field of audiovisual broadcasting thanks to the transmission mode included in Release-16 standard 3GPP, which is currently called FeMBMS (Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) or commonly known as Broadcast Release-16.

6G Technology Status Report

6G, as the name suggests, is the sixth generation of mobile connectivity. Just as 4G replaced 3G and 5G replaced 4G, 6G will come to replace 5G with higher speed and even lower latency. Before that, however, we will go through an intermediate stage known as 5G+ or advanced 5G.

One of the objectives of 6G is to further reduce latency in connections and significantly increase transmission speeds. The 6G standard has not yet been defined and the spectrum bands to be used for data transmission are unknown, but it is estimated that it will be commercialized in 2030. The first real use cases on this network could arrive between 2026 and 2028.

Other work in progress:

  • Cell sizing estimation of 5G systems.
  • Technologies for communication recovery in emergency situations.
  • Frequency and phase synchronization of a 5G network with SyncE and PTP.

Artificial Intelligence applied to Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Development of the DORA application.

The Chair has developed language models and software for the automated management of queries to the RTVE Ombudsman’s Office of the Spectator.

Innovative ICT applications for defense and other Government Agencies.

  • Applicability of the Network Data Analytics Function to 5G military tactical bubbles.
  • Optimization of the installation of devices in enclosures with security restrictions.
  • Framework for Artificial Intelligence Detection of Cyberattacks using Anomaly Localization.
  • Virtual assistant for the control of European funds.
