Quantum technologies applied to space

The paper presented by Isabel Carnoto Amat, with the collaboration of Jessica César Cuello, Rosa María Pulido Puerto, Francisco Javier Morales Comalat, Pablo Fajardo and Luis Enrique García Muñoz was one of the three papers that won the European Defence Agency (EDA) award in the Research, Technology & Innovation Defence Papers Awards 2024.

“Towards small object detection in space: photonic integrated quantum illumination” was the paper presented by Isabel Carnoto with the collaboration of her colleagues from the Isdefe Horizon Network Space Observatory and presents a novel approach to detect small debris and satellites using quantum illumination.

The paper discusses the potential of quantum technologies to enhance detection capabilities by improving sensitivity and reducing noise levels. Although the technology is not yet ripe for immediate deployment, the authors emphasize its promising future in providing comprehensive coverage and improved reliability for space debris detection.
